002 Play [Video || Action]

[Tim is out in the park with a football. He's rigged up an old tire to swing from a tree limb and he's hammering the football through the tire. He jogs out to get the football then returns to do it again. Throwing passes aren't really his thing but catching passes takes more than one person. He actually looks fairly thoughtful for a change rather than confused. ]

Anybody wanna play catch or want to learn?

[Tim looks up when the guy says his name and nods.]

Yeah, that's me. You Teddy?

[Good idea. Tim comes from a strictly humans without superpowers world. Give him a bit to adapt]

Yeah. I guess you played back home?

Yeah. My team just got back from winnin' State. [Clearly he's proud of this. he's got a state championship ring on his right hand]

Oh, cool. I used to be on my school's team, but we weren't particularly good. And I don't know if it'll work out for me to play school sports anymore.

Guess we're kinda screwed on that here. [He thinks you're talking about because you're here.]

Oh, yeah, here.

[Right. Totally what Teddy was meant because he definitely doesn't want to have to go into that explanation.]

I've been here over a year so it's not like I've even been going to school.

Seriously? No one bitches at you when you don't go?

No, I mean, why would they? It's not like you'd remember anything when you got home. I guess the only problem is if you stay here long enough to turn 18 and you stop getting stuff for free and need to find a real job. But I'd be fine with taking something unskilled, and anyway it's kind of depressing to think about being here that long.

Yeah. Need a fifth of whiskey depressing. How old are you?

Seventeen. But it's weird though, because I'll be sixteen again when I go back.

Seriously? It just resets like that?

That's what everyone who's left and come back says. Actually, I've left and come back, I just don't remember the other times I was here for some reason.

This place is so screwed up.

You've been here a while though. You get used to it?

Pretty much. I mean, the city always finds a way to surprise you but after this long here I feel like I've basically settled in. But things were kind of crazy at home, so maybe that actually made it easier.

I'm lucky have friends from home who are here--it makes a really big difference.

Yeah? I'm tryin' to get used to it. I'm the only one from my home here though.

New York City. So, basically the opposite of that.

Huh. Pretty sure that'd drive me crazy.

It's just what's normal for me--I have no idea what living without tons of people and noise around would be like. This place actually seems kinda small.

Really? 'Cause this place is huge. [And he hasn't been to the Underground yet.]

It's all a matter of perspective. You can adjust to just about anything. And I like the city--New York, I mean--there's always stuff to do and every kind of food you could possibly want and you're always in sight of a Starbucks.
