And I would not like that very much. Though theoretically the library does seem to have enough books to entertain me for quite a while.

Big dance that you have before you graduate. The girls dress up in sparkly dresses and the guys where tuxes.

Yeah you'll get pasty and forget how to talk to people though.

I've not been to many dances. [ Her aunt wouldn't let her, and Nate gambled away their money anyways.

In Texas, bein' pale is outta place.

Yes, indeed. Only the workers have a tan, the higher classes have the possibility to stay out of the sun.

Sorta reverses. The rich girls go off somewhere and get a tan in the middle of winter. The poor girls are stuck in the cold and gotta do with some smelly gunk that turns 'em more orange than tan.

Oh. That is quite interesting. But- smelly gunk?

It's supposed to make 'em look like they've been somewhere like Mexico or where ever for the winter but it just ends up makin' 'em look orange and they smell funky.

I do not think any such thing exists in my time, or if it does I am not aware of it.

Pretty sure it was like a 1970's thing or something. [He has no idea, really.]

Don't use it. It smells bad and it tastes worse.

Well...when we'd go out, I'd end up kissing parts of their body. If they'd put it on earlier that night, it tasted like crap.

I will certainly require help. [ That's-- a lot of shoes unlike any shoe Tessa has ever worn. ]

Okay you're probably gonna want somethin' lightweight and maybe low profile but with cushion in the ball 'cause that's where it's gonna hit the hardest when you run. [He wanders down the aisle picking up something that's light grey and hot pink.] Like this.

Ah. [ Tessa has no idea what he's talking about, but she nods anyhow.

She takes the shoes from him and looks around. Is she supposed to-- try them? Here and now? But she sees someone else doing just that, so she settles down on a chair and does just that.

The shoes look rather ridiculous with her dress, but they're more comfortable than she'd have expected. ]

[He grins watching her try them on and then nods.] Yeah? Billy, my older brother, used to always make me run 'round the store in new shoes to see if they were 'fast' so...[He gestures toward the aisles.]
